Passivation improves the corrosion resistance of parts made from 200, 300 and 400 series and precipitation-hardened corrosion-resistant steels by removing soils and free iron.

Passivation does not remove heat treat scale. It is usually removed by glass bead blasting. 440C materical is not normally passivated. Cleaning by mechanical methods is recommended.
